Lieutenant Jeff Coburn walked away from the law after watching a judge railroad his father. He joined the Navy instead, flew missions off the Horn of Africa, and drew a Pentagon tour when the deployment ended. It is supposed to be an easy year of paperwork and staff meetings.

Then his uncle Paul dies alone in his West Virginia cabin, and Jeff knows the suicide ruling is wrong before he finishes crossing the room. Paul was left-handed, and the weapon lies on his right. Everything else in that cabin tells the same story to anyone willing to look at it.

The record the Marine Corps sends back is more black ink than paper. But what the censors left behind is a trail, planted by a man who understood exactly what he was up against and knew somebody would come looking. Jeff follows it back into the mountains his family has been surviving for generations, and into something that started in Vietnam and has been feeding on the Navy for forty years, protected by the people who took Paul Coburn's honor.
